Overview
Portugal’s capital has plenty to offer — as evidenced by what you’ve seen thus far — but it’s also in a prime location for visiting local villages and sites of both historic and natural significance. In fact, some of Lisbon’s most interesting attractions aren’t even in Lisbon proper; rather, they’re hidden in the towns and landscapes on the city’s periphery. To begin your tour of Lisbon’s surroundings, you’ll meet your local guide at your hotel for a full-day excursion of roughly seven hours. You’ll start your journey roughly 25 minutes outside of Lisbon in the neighboring towns of Cascais and Estoril. These sister seaside villages boast robust reputations as opulent resort destinations for the Portuguese and European aristocrats of eras past. Even European royalty once flocked to the area throughout different periods of history, and with landscapes along the dreamy Portuguese Riviera, it’s easy to understand why. Not far from Cascais, you’ll continue driving another half and hour until you reach Sintra. Nestled within UNESCO-recognized mountains, Sintra brims with historic palaces, luxe manors, and detailed palatial houses that make it easy to envision the city of years prior. As you make your way to Sintra, ask your driver to stop at Cabo da Roca: the westernmost point of mainland Europe. After your day of sightseeing, you'll return to your hotel, with the rest of the evening yours to further uncover Lisbon's treasures. You'll have the option to enjoy a fado musical performance and dive deeper into Lisbon's culture. (Breakfast)
Highlights
Fado Musical Experience (optional)
A musical genre symbolic of Portugal and specifically Lisbon, Fado is engrained in the Portuguese soul. During this optional musical experience, you'll attend a Fado show and listen to traditional songs delivered by professional singers. Known as Portugal's urban popular song, Fado received recognition from UNESCO in 2011, and, with World Heritage status, reflects the city and country alike.
Cascais and Estoril
The pinnacle of coastal luxury, Cascais and Estoril entice visitors with white sand beaches, glittering blue waters, and colorful tiles that adorn building after building. Mere miles apart, the two towns connect via a waterfront walkway. To pass between these neighboring villages, you can take a stroll down the scenic pathway, or drive just a few minutes away.
Sintra
Think: lush gardens, towering mountains, and dewy forests thick with ferns and lichen. What’s not to enchant you in Sintra? The city appears like a page torn from a fairy tale, filling that natural landscape with glittering palaces, regal castles, and pastel-hued manors. Given this beauty, it’s not surprising that Celts worshipped their moon god here, while 18th-century royals ambled about the city’s blooming gardens. Even Lord Byron once waxed poetic about Sintra's charms.
