Overview
It’s time to say your goodbyes to Adelaide and begin your road trip toward South Australia's largest mountains. After breakfast this morning, collect your rental vehicle and head north toward Port Augusta. Today’s journey will prove the longest single leg of your road trip, but it comes with some fascinating stops along the way. Near Dublin, for instance, look out for the Tin Man and Flying Saucer community sculptures. From there, you’ll continue north to Port Pirie, passing one of Australia's biggest wind farms atop the Barunga Ranges, and Port Augusta. Next up, the small township of Quorn deserves a stop and a snack break; pick up a slice of quandong — wild peach — pie, before continuing your journey via Hawker into the Flinders Ranges. Hawker marks the beginning of the Outback proper, so use this town to refuel your car before venturing further north. You’re in the endless, remote, and arid Outback now! Check in to your hotel and celebrate your arrival in the Flinders Ranges by getting out of the car and into a four-wheel vehicle for a 40-minute safari. During this tour with a local expert guide, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see native wildlife before the setting sun works its magic over the landscapes. You'll be back to your hotel just before dark, where you can enjoy the scenery — and emerging stars — from the comforts of your remote and rugged oasis.
Highlights
Road Trip to Flinders Range
Today’s drive may take about five hours, but it promises a slew of interesting towns, meals, and artworks along the way. You’ll find Port Augusta, for instance, where the Outback meets the ocean, so a stop in this bustling regional center offers a range of activities and stories steeped in Aboriginal history. Stop here during your drive before continuing onward to Quorn and the jaw-dropping peaks of the Flinders Range.
Sunset Safari and Picnic
Start your time in the Outback with the best views around during this evening’s landscape safari with a local expert guide. During this thrilling ride, you’ll take in the Outback’s brilliant sunset with a panoramic view from Yaltaordla Hill. As the day’s last rays kiss Rawnsley Bluff and the Chace Range goodnight, you’ll enjoy your choice of sparkling wine or beer alongside delicious canapés — the perfect end to your first day in this mesmerizing area.
