Searching for Leatherback Turtles and Mischievous Monkeys in Tortuguero
Overview
After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll meet a local expert guide for a boat tour of Tortuguero National Park: a wilderness area with an extraordinary representation of biological diversity. During this guided boat tour, you’ll spot an array of the mammals, birds, and fish that live in the park’s 11 defined habitats — yes, there are 11. Among the animals to look for, turtles inspired the park’s name, so you’ll head to a 22-mile expanse of beach — nurtured by strong Caribbean currents — where sea turtles love to nest. From July through October, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles populate this area, while the leatherback — the world’s largest sea turtle — nests from February to July. Most of today’s tour will occur on the boat, with an expert outdoors guide who’s well-versed in how to find the hidden. Your guide will point out any wildlife while explaining fun facts and fascinating tidbits about the lives you’re looking for. Who knows? You may even see a few mischievous monkeys swinging around the jungles. When the tour ends, you’ll have free time in the afternoon to enjoy your surroundings, and reflect on the marvels you've just witnessed. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Highlights
Tortuguero Boat Tour
The best way to see Tortuguero? By boat, which you’ll discover firsthand during your guided boat tour of this incredible natural park. As you make your way through the park’s waterways, your expert outdoors guide will educate you about the diverse species of wildlife and environments you’re passing through. Depending on when, exactly, you’re traveling, you may be lucky enough to see the endangered leatherback turtles that attract visitors far and wide. Should you time your visit properly, you’ll catch the nesting and hatching period; nothing compares to the magic of watching baby turtles as they crawl along the sand.
Tortuguero's 11 Habitats
Tortuguero contains 11 diverse and distinct habitats — all within the park’s domain. As Costa Rica’s second-largest wetland, the park protects the likes of a dense rainforest, swampland, beaches, mangroves, and many more environments. It’s a stunning and staggering example of biodiversity that harbors even more life forms.
