Day Trip to Kamakura and a Dose of Coastal Culture

Overview

Now that you’ve experienced some of Tokyo’s highlights, you’ll embark on your first day trip from the city. After breakfast this morning, you’ll head to Kamakura: a coastal town celebrated for its cultural heritage. While there, you’ll embark on a self-guided tour at your own pace, and visit the highlights of the city. These landmarks and sites include the likes of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Kencho-ji Temple, and the Great Buddha. Yet today’s visit also doubles as a sakura-viewing excursion, as you’ll admire the seasonal blooms amid the landmarks. Gain a new perspective on Japanese cherry blossoms outside the realm of Tokyo, witnessing all the ways in which these spectacular flowers bring yet another city to life. After such a scenic time in Kamakura, you’ll head back to Tokyo, with the remainder of the afternoon and evening at your leisure. Sit down for dinner at a sushi restaurant or grab okonomiyaki from a street food stall, and cap off the night in any way that appeals to you. (Breakfast)

Highlights

Kamakura

Kamakura may be small, but it packs plenty of spiritual and cultural hallmarks in its spot on the coast. During today’s self-guided tour of Kamakura, you’ll experience the city’s most scenic and historic highlights, the most notable of which may very well be the Great Buddha. A bronze statue that’s nearly 40 feet high, the hulking Great Buddha maintains its post in the open air, drawing visitors from far and wide.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, a centuries-old shrine, forms the spiritual core of Kamakura, occupying a scenic garden that’s at its best every spring. As you visit this shrine today, you can duck into the museums and historic halls, but make sure to spend at least some of your time outside. On the fringes of the shrine, you’ll find a set of ponds, which, should you visit at the right time, nurture a blooming frame of pink sakura petals.
