Captivating Capri Island by Motorboat and the Blue Grotto
Overview
After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll head to the island of Capri on a small group guided tour. And you’ll get there in classic Amalfi fashion — by boat. Meet your local expert guide for your scenic journey through the same seas where the mythological hero Ulysses once heard the siren song of mermaids. You’ll board a motorboat and, after circling the island, you’ll dock at Marina Grande. Here, you’ll have ample free time to explore the exclusive Capri Island by foot. From the piazzetta of Capri, you can walk the colorful alleyways to the heart of the island and the spectacular Natural Arch: a arch-shaped rock formation created by the erosion of a grotto during the Paleolithic area. You can also take a cab — a convertible, no less! — to Anacapri, higher up on the island. During the day the boat will drop anchor in several spots to give you the opportunity to swim in the sparkling blue Mediterranean Sea. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the famous Blue Grotto. Should you choose to opt in to this experience, you’ll take a small rowing boat into the majestic sea cave. Come afternoon, the boat will pick you up in the afternoon to head back the way you came. You’ll have the rest of the evening free to sip Amalfi limoncello and stroll the enchanting streets of this beloved coastline. (Breakfast)
Highlights
Blue Grotto (optional)
When sunlight bounces off the walls of the beloved Blue Grotto, it produces electric-blue water that seems to glow. Such an effect has bewitched visitors since Roman times; back then, Emperor Tiberius so revered the sea cove that he commissioned statues to decorate it. During this optional experience, you'll board a small rowboat to access the cave's entrance, with the chance to head inside the grotto, too.
Boat Trip and Tour of Capri
To fully take in the scope and splendor of the Amalfi Coast, you have to see it at least once from the sea. Enjoy a motorboat tour from Amalfi to Capri Island, where you'll visit secret caves, circle the island, and stop for a secluded swim. While the bulk of your day centers around the water, you'll later cruise into the marina, leaving you with a few hours to stroll the island during your small group experience.
Capri Island Mythology
Known now for its dramatic coastal scenery and luxe reputation, Capri has been appreciated for at least 2,000 years. Emperor Augustus and Emperor Tiberius both owned homes here, while Odysseus sailed past the island in Homer's "Odyssey." As you meet the island for yourself today, you'll fall in love with its colorful houses, small fishing boats, and mountain backdrop. It's also a place to see and be seen; there's a reason why so many celebrities anchor their yachts in Marina Grande.
Anacapri and Monte Solaro (optional)
Capri Island splinters into two parts — Capri and Anacapri — and you'll have free time today to experience them in tandem. Most of the private boats and ferries land in Capri, but you can take a convertible cab or bus to reach the elevated and quiet area of Anacapri. From the main square, you can take the scenic chair lift that takes you to the top of Monte Solaro, the highest point of the entire island. From here, you'll gaze out at the entire Amalfi Coast, the Bay of Naples, and the majestic Vesuvius.
Accommodations
Hotel Floridiana (or similar)
This serene Amalfi hotel sits in the city center, roughly 50 meters from the cathedral and 100 meters from the beach. In the 12th century, it served as the ancient residence of the "Pisani," a local aristocratic family, and later underwent renovations during the 17th and 18th centuries. Most recently, the property undertook development projects in 2004 to conserve its original characteristics, blending historic appeal with modern comforts. Now, you can admire the wonderful frescos in the main hall before relaxing in the sleek, updated rooms.
