Kales Fortress

Ierapetra

Overlooking the fishing harbour, the crenellated Venetian fort dates from the 17th century but was built atop an older defensive structure reputedly built by Genoese pirates in the 13th century and destroyed by an earthquake and the Turks. There's not much to see inside, but it's fun to climb up to the ramparts and the single tower for grand views of the bay and the mountains.
