Cosby

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

This large, beautifully forested campground is a good alternative to the heavily used campgrounds, as it tends to be slightly less chaotic than Cades Cove or Smokemont. Several loops are lined with more than 100 campsites that afford varying degrees of privacy. The campground lies off Hwy 32, near the Tennessee town of Cosby.

Twenty-six campsites are available for advanced reservations; the other 100 are first-come first-served. During the low season, park rangers might not be around and you'll have to self-pay (so bring appropriate change).

You can access some fine trails here, including the Low Gap Trail, which leads up to the Appalachian Trail, 2.5 miles to the southeast.
