Protected by the Parc Natural de Ses Salines, Formentera’s salt pans haven't been used for salt production since 1984, though salt crystals still form in the pools naturally. Formed in Phoenician times, they now make up an important wetland zone for birdlife, including waders, gulls and the odd visiting flamingo. August to October is the best time to spot the latter.
