This phenomenally restored 1908 art-nouveau bed-down just might be Lisbon's coolest new hotel. The 36 rooms feature French-style doors to seal off double-glazed windows facing the avenue or Intendente square, plus vintage phones, wools throws by Burel Factory and B&W photos of the building's transformation. But its public art installations are what stand out the most.
There's a who's who of Lisbon's most cutting-edge street and visual artists, with striking displays by Bordallo II in the lobby (beetle) and bar (dragonfly), an elevator mural by Vanessa Teodoro that ascends/descends through the building's history (it was once a brothel), a recycled wire Spiderman by David Oliveira in the stairwell, and burlesque-style pieces throughout by Irmãos Marques. It all comes together in the high-design bar among rough-hewn hardwood walls and arched exposed-brick ceilings.
