Egypt’s largest camel market is held at Birqash (pronounced Bir’ash), a small village 35km northwest of Cairo, just on the edge of the Delta’s cultivated land. Many tour operators tout visiting this market as an "off the beaten path" or "local experience." Due to reports of mistreatment of animals, Lonely Planet does not recommend visiting the market.
