McBrides Camp

Zambia

Situated at the confluence of the Mushingashi and Kafue Rivers, this genuine bush camp is cleverly built around wildlife paths, assuring the regular presence of wild visitors. Not your average high-end lodge, the nine thatch-and-wood chalets are spacious and simple, and offer an authentic vintage safari setup. The campsite is basic, shady and has clean and characterful open-air bathrooms.

Meals in the main lodge are available for campers too, or otherwise there's a braai stand – but you'll need to bring your own firewood (though they can help out if you get stuck).

The other side of the river is where walking safaris are conducted. This is a wild part of the park and you’ve a good chance of spotting lots of wildlife. Owners Chris and Charlotte’s passion is lions; Chris is a bona fide bush legend (with a masters in Wildlife Management) and has written three books on lions – White Lions of Timbavati the only one still easily available. They also can arrange a fly camp 40km from here, as well as boat trips, night and day wildlife drives.

There was talk of possibly opening up another camp in the wildlife-rich Mushingashi Conservancy just outside the northeastern border of Kafue proper.
