Hotel Uzbekistan

Tashkent

This old dinosaur towering over central Amir Timur maydoni has reinvented itself as Tashkent’s best-value top-end hotel. Helpful receptionists have replaced the scowling babushkas and most of the rooms are sleek and modern with flat-screen TVs and plush comforters (the bathrooms still need some work). You are here for the location and the ex-Soviet vibe, so don't expect international standards of management.

This is one place to push for a hefty discount, with online rates around US$80 for a double.
