Roche Harbor Resort

San Juan Islands

Located on the site of the former lime kiln and estate of limestone king John McMillin, this seaside 'village' is a posh getaway. The centerpiece is the old Hotel de Haro, where the poky rooms are enlivened by the fact that John Wayne once brushed his teeth here. Town houses are up behind the harbor, and modern condominiums are tucked behind trees.

Waterfront restaurants, a 377-berth marina with boat rentals, a spa and an old dockside general store make the place quite self-contained. It can feel a bit contrived and overly gentrified – lovers of back-to-nature-type lodgings should stay elsewhere.
