Brimming with Civil War artifacts and period antiques, one of the few antebellum homes to survive in Columbia is now a lovely B&B and a small museum to boot. It's worth asking the innkeeper for a tour of the house, which once belonged to famous confederate documentarian Mary Boykin Chestnut.
Chestnut's personal account of the Civil War, A Diary from Dixie, won a Pulitzer Prize for history, and she wrote a portion of the diary while living here. She also hosted Jefferson Davis, who gave his last presidential speech from the front porch.
Every room has a soaking tub, and the yummy breakfast often includes items like blueberry pancakes and omelets.
