Charleston

Once an abandoned federal office building, this former eyesore was tinkered with by architects for eight years before reopening as a glistening ode to mid-century modern design. It's a postbellum breath of fresh air, ingeniously curated with the finest of local furnishings, textiles and hand-painted wallpaper. Rooms are opulent but homey, with floor-to-ceiling windows, plush mattresses and all-marble bathrooms.

The spa is dreamy, the restaurant's food is yum and the cocktail bar is first class.
