Herwig's Austrian Bistro

Top choice in Pennsylvania

Herwigs has trademarked the phrase 'Where Bacon is an Herb' for good reason: your veggie choices here are pretty slim. But if you're channeling your inner carnivore you're in for a treat. Austrian dishes couldn't be more authentic and meals are reasonably priced. The casual, counter-style spot is hopping with students during the winter, but empties out in summer after graduation.

Note that staff do not expect to see anything left on the plate. While you may be tempted to giggle at their placard admonishing those who can't finish (several options are laid out: paying $35 for a take-home box or working in the kitchen are among the choices), they do not. So come here hungry and prepare to leave absolutely stuffed.
