Umstead Hotel & Spa

Set in a wooded suburban office park, 10 miles west of downtown, and backing onto a small lake, the Umstead is targeted squarely at visiting biotech CEOs. As well as simple but sumptuous rooms – deep-soak bathtubs, twin vanities – it has a Zen-like spa complete with meditation courtyard. There’s a dog playground, and a pet fee of $200 per stay.
