Bell Book & Candle

West Village, Chelsea & Meatpacking District

Step down into this candlelit gastropub for strong, inventive libations with infused spirits and smoky mezcals and hearty late-night pub grub. A 20-something crowd gathers around the small, packed bar (for $1 oysters and happy-hour drink specials early in the night), though there's a lot more seating in the back, with big booths ideal for larger groups.

Not well known is a hidden table behind the bar, where the wallpaper is plastered with figures of women showing off full-frontal nudity. The bartender passes drinks through a little hole in the wall as if you're hosting your own top-secret party.
