The oldest Mexican restaurant in New York City, this east-side stalwart has been serving up old-school charm since 1959, from the rustic metal lanterns and dapper Latin waiters to the satisfying south-of-the-border standbys. (In a nod to modernity there's now a special meatless menu section.)
House classics include the ropa vieja (shredded braised flank steak with mushrooms and fried plantains), and the signature mole poblano de pollo (chicken stewed in a rich chili-and-chocolate-spiked sauce). End the night with a shot of the homemade pineapple tequila.
