Sugarite Canyon State Park

New Mexico

The nicest place to stay near Raton, with two campgrounds set amid the the pretty mesas and forests of Sugarite Canyon: Lake Alice and Soda Pocket. Lake Alice is open year-round; Soda Pocket is open May through September. The park is 10 miles northeast of town via Hwy 72 and Hwy 526.

In summer, a number of short hiking trails branch off a half-mile nature trail, while in winter the 7800ft elevation is suitable for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
