Bell's started brewing in 1985, so it was doing the craft beer thing before it was a thing. Now it's one of Michigan's largest breweries. Bell's Eccentric Cafe occupies a vintage, exposed brick building and taps 20-plus beers. It's always crowded with fans piling in for summery Oberon, hopped up Two Hearted Ale and special brews only available here at the source.
High-end pub grub, a beer garden, live music and a bottle shop add to the pleasure. Free hour-long tours take place on weekend afternoons; times vary, so check the website for the current schedule and reserve ahead. Free tours that delve more deeply into the brewing process also are available at Bell's state-of-the-art facility in Comstock, 7 miles east, though note there is no pub onsite.
