Once a relay stop on a post road, the Old Inn (c 1760) is exactly what most people picture when they think New England country inn. The dining rooms are lit entirely by candlelight (mains $29 to $46), and guest rooms have wide-plank floors, four-poster beds and fireplaces. Breakfast features treats such as homemade granola, fresh fruit and warm pastries.

Rooms in the nearby Thayer House are equally atmospheric but more spacious. This property shares welcoming common areas, a swimming pool and gorgeous views all around.
