Inn at Irwin Gardens

Top choice in Indiana

A mighty antidote to Columbus' modernist flare, this 1864 Victorian monolith with Edwardian furnishings and Italianate gardens (inspired by Pompeii) sits steps from the architectural soul of town, but in stark contrast to its mid-century modern ethos. Chock-full of vintage furniture (some items favor form over function, but that hardly matters) and drowning in extraordinary detail, these are historic sleeps.

Our favorite room is the Library, draped in period pieces and overlooking the incredible gardens, while the 3rd-floor WG Irwin Suite, dressed in ornate quarter-sawn white-oak paneling, wins the best bedroom prize (it was an absolute star in the 2017 film Columbus).
