Partridge Inn

Georgia

Dating to the 1890s, whitewashed Partridge Inn is Augusta's most storied hotel. This grand, piecemeal-built Southern charmer is dressed somewhat in arts-and-crafts style and is an unusual hodgepodge of asymmetric verandas, balconies and porches that clocks in at city-block size. A modern makeover has given the rooms a contemporary flourish, with abstract local art and subway-tiled shower floors.

The restaurant is excellent (mains $20 to $37), with some unusual dishes (blackened ostrich). The rooftop bar is a social focal point for well-to-do Augustans.
