Clean lines, loud hip-hop and a gourmet pedigree animate this fast-food concept from Roy Choi, the chef credited with starting LA's food-truck revolution. Locol does bargain-priced yet quality burgers, fried chicken burgers and chicken 'nugs', plus less expected fast food such as tasty shrimp and grits, waffles with chicken wings and hearty 'foldies', which are like modified quesadillas.
You can even get green juice or indulge in soft-serve ice cream or shakes, and it's all served on plant-based biodegradable disposable plates and utensils.
The best part, though, is its mission: to bring quality food to the one-time 'food desert' of Watts and employ local people to get a leg up. In part for this, Locol was named Los Angeles Magazine's restaurant of the year in 2017.
