Cañada del Brujo

Uruguay

Set amid open fields in an old schoolhouse 8km from Quebrada de los Cuervos, this rustic three-room hostel invites guests to settle into the simple pleasures of gaucho life: exploring the countryside on foot or horseback, drinking mate, eating simple meals cooked on the woodstove and watching spectacular sunsets under the big sky.

Hostel owner Pablo Rado leads hikes (UR$250) and horseback rides (UR$480) to the nearby Salto del Brujo waterfall. With advance notice, he can also provide transportation to the hostel from Treinta y Tres (per person UR$300) or from the highway turnoff at Km 306.7 on Ruta 8 (per person UR$150).
