Hotel Cheltikov

Kars

This boutique hotel fills a stately 19th-century building that was later recycled as a maternity hospital. Rooms and common areas are spacious and elegant, many with chandeliers hung from star-burst wooden ceiling bosses. Rooms beautifully counterpoint dark panelling with bright white walls, some incorporating elements of original stonework. All have tea- and coffee-making gear and excellent bathrooms.

The large lounge elegantly mixes historical features and contemporary design but the garden could use a little more artistry and the neighbourhood, while quiet and central, has a slightly seedy feel at night.
