Right on the sandy northern tip of Foa, gazing across at Nukunamo island, family-friendly Matafonua was hammered by Tropical Cyclone Ian in 2014 but has been fully resurrected. Lovely water-view fale are totally comfortable, with freshwater showers in well-designed shared bathrooms. There's also an all-day cafe-bar, lagoon swimming and snorkelling, kayaks, bicycles and cultural tours to Ha’ano island.
