There is no more fashionable Strandpaviljoen (beach pavilion) on the island than the utterly fabulous Oost, a contemporary shoebox hidden between sand dunes and a dreamy swath of fine golden sand. Fish and shellfish from the North and Wadden Seas – with a creative fusion touch and baked in a charcoal oven – is what it does best.
The lunch special, Schelpen in het Zand ('mussels in sand'), aka a herb-laced bowl of mussels and spiced breadcrumbs with bread and seaweed butter, is outstanding, as is the homemade beef burger with wakame seaweed and wasabi mayo. Between meals, there are sardine platters, herrings, cockles and fishy spring rolls to nibble on. Dinner, served from 6pm, is a four-course affair strictly by reservation.
