While sometimes putting design before function in its eight starkly stylish, reverberant rooms, de KASerne has a winning formula of superbly comfortable beds, free parking, free minibar and a welcome tipple at the trendy bar-restaurant. It's in the somewhat austere Paleiskwartier area, a 10-minute walk southwest from the old town via a foliage-decked pedestrian bridge across the rail tracks.
South-facing rooms have big picture windows, north ones are darker with concrete floors. If checking in on a Sunday, arrive by 6pm as the place is unstaffed from then till Monday morning. On other evenings don't miss ordering a perfectly made G&T garnished with juniper berries and bergamot, and foaming with liquid-nitrogen coolant.
