De Bessenschuur

Frisian Islands

Once a storage shed for the copious cranberry harvest in this part of the island, this pretty forest cottage with red-and-white-striped canopies now serves various berry-based drinks, pastries and puddings. It makes an ideal stop on a bike ride to or from the beach in West ann Zee (2.3km further north).

A traditional fruit of the island for centuries, wild cranberries pepper the sand dunes, and cranberry heather – a blaze of pink-purple during the flowering period in late May and early June – carpets the wet dune valleys. The harvest usually takes place from early September until November. A small museum on the 1st floor of Bessenschuur includes black-and-white photos of the cranberry harvest over the centuries.
