Slavery Memorial

Amsterdam


Slavery was abolished in the Dutch colonies of Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles in 1863, and Surinamese sculptor Erwin de Vries was commissioned to create this monument, which depicts both the oppression of slaves and hope for the future.
