Shinawatra Thai Silk

Chiang Mai

This venerable family-owned silk shop was already a household name before the owners' nephew, Thaksin Shinawatra, became (now exiled) prime minister. The range here is a little more dowdy and middle-aged than at the competition, but it's good for scarves, shirts, ties and the like.

There's also a showroom in San Kamphaeng that offers an opportunity to learn about how Thai silk is made.
