Dhara Dhevi

Top choice in Chiang Mai

At first sight it's hard to tell if Dhara Dhevi is a resort or an ancient temple complex. In fact the structures were built in the 2000s, yet they're jaw-droppingly opulent with amazing attention to detail. The re-created traditional Lanna village sprawls over grounds full of whitewashed colonnades, teak pavilions, antiques and landscaped ponds and rice terraces.

At sunset in particular you might just think you've been transported to some modern-day, northern Thai version of Angkor Wat. The rooms continue the regal design and are equipped with every imaginable comfort. You can enjoy spectacular food, indulgent massages, craft workshops, cooking courses and even rice-planting classes without ever leaving the compound.

There's a special kids' club and a babysitting service so it's great for families.
