The universally praised Lake Shore Lodge & Campsite has beach chalets with a lovely open ‘African Zen’ design incorporating shells, sand, ropes, flowers and sun-bleached wood – it's an oasis of barefoot luxury. If this is outside your budget it also has garden bandas, which are a low-key version of the chalets, and camping with spotless bathrooms – something, indeed, for everyone.
There are enough activities to keep you busy for days: kayaking on the lake, quad biking, mountain biking, diving (it’s the only PADI-certified operation on the lake), snorkelling, village tours, island dinners, massages, yoga deck, jacuzzi and more. It's great to combine a trip to the lodge with a trip to Katavi and/or Mahale Mountains national parks. Staff can take you to both using their own vehicles and boats (contact them for current itineraries and details). Best of all, the hosts are fantastic at making you feel right at home. You won't want to leave.
