Rustom Masain

Tajikistan

Although now in his dotage and no longer living locally, some of the works of this master instrument maker are for sale in the seldom-visited village of Rasht. The old master clearly had a sense of humour and this is reflected in the quirky designs, many of which suggest animals and birds.

His son has inherited the family business and continues to use the workshop inside this traditional Pamiri home. The house is around 2km uphill from Anderob and the views from the ascent alone make it well worth the detour.
