Comfort, views and an artistic take on designer minimalism come together to make Meni's Place so popular that it doesn't even need a sign. The five rooms use an industrial-grey palate enlivened by knick-knacks, distressed furniture and occasional bursts of mural flamboyance. Twin-aspect balconies make the top-floor quad especially superb.
The youthful caretaker speaks English. Meni's Place is not far from the main road but a little hard to find. In Hongtou, take the most northerly of the short lanes that climb inland, then after barely 50m, turn left and walk 40m down the narrow passageway between houses 51 and 83.
