Meander 1948

Taipei

This former dorm for paper-factory workers has been converted into an elegant budget hotel with 111 beds divided into dorms and rooms. Although there's no obvious heritage in the rooms, the warren-like corridors and narrow lift evoke a little of yesteryear. Everything is clean and well run. Don't miss the giant net hammock upstairs and the excellent (if pricey) coffee.

Inventive and careful use of the original features won the team an award for heritage reconstruction in 2018. Splash out on a 4th-floor balcony room for the views.
