Penghu's main market bustles with stalls selling everything from fresh veggies and dried fish to shoes and woks. Flanking lanes have a selection of excellent no-fuss eateries.

Try superb meatball-in-mochi dumplings at 30 Daren St, imaginative savoury rice ball creations at 28 Dazhi St, reliable pork rib noodle soup (豬排麵, zhūpái miàn) at 4 Lane 18, Dazhi St and pumpkin noodles (金瓜麵猴; jīnguā miànhóu) at the stall outside 16 Dazhi St. Note that places close when stocks run out – often by 11am.
