As though tumbling out of a Tim Burton film set, Cheese Bon goes overboard with shutters and suitcases, upside-down lampstands and a giant metal clock face to create an enthralling yet adorably mellow architectural statement.
Surveying one of the cosiest corners of central Hualien, the six comfortable rooms aren't huge but the fittings have some old-world elements – like a long-nosed spout on the kettle. The little pasta restaurant where you check in is pretty cute too. Living on the top floor, the enthusiastic owners speak English and Japanese.
