Anchored on a private white- and pink-sand motu a 10-minute boat ride from the village, this Australian-run venture is the kind of haven stressed-out city slickers dream about. The massive bungalows are built from gnarled hunks of wood, coral stonework and coconut thatch, and the restaurant is another Crusoe-with-style masterpiece. There are only six units, which ensures intimacy.
The feel is much more of a private club than a resort here, with most things, from snorkelling equipment to use of the kayaks, being free. Prices also include daily excursions. The ethos here is laid-back, ecological – everything is powered by wind and sun – and activity-oriented. Ninamu appeals to honeymooners, families and outdoorsy types in equal measures – a winning formula. One weak point? The motu is really small.
