Långholmen Hotell & Vandrarhem

Top choice

Guests at this hotel-hostel, in a former prison on Långholmen island, sleep on bunks in a cell, with either shared or private baths (it's much nicer than that sounds; there's a playful vibe throughout). There's laundry service, a good guest kitchen, excellent breakfast, a restaurant serving meals all day June to August, and a popular Långholmen bathing spot a towel flick away.

Hotel-standard rooms are also in cells but spruced up with textured wall coverings and mod fixtures; some of the budget doubles are in bunks, so be sure to clarify the room configuration you want. The hostel contains a prison museum; guests visit free (open 11am-4pm, nonguest adult/child 25/10kr). Bicycles are available to rent from reception, and cycling/jogging trails line the surrounding area.
