One of Belgrade's most famous buildings, this monolithic communist relic was the happening place in its Yugoslavia heyday; everyone from Tina Turner to Queen Elizabeth II had a turn beneath its sheets. Bombed during the 1990s NATO campaign, it remained shuttered for decades. It's now back in full swing, and though it's been renovated, the feel remains delightfully old-school Yugo.
While the rooms are far from fancy, they are comfortable, and its location on the Danube is exceptional (55 newer rooms are a bit of a step up but are cheaper due to street views). The complex includes a river-facing Mexican restaurant and popular shisha bar, an American-style diner and a small shopping arcade. Come expecting a taste of the past – rather than a stay in paradise – and you'll have a great time.
