Gîte du Lac

Senegal

Set on the north shore of the lake, the Gîte du Lac makes a great base when you want to get away from it all. It has attractive cabins that open onto a sandy, palm-filled yard, with hammocks strewn about and only the sound of birdsong (and perhaps nibbling goats) to break the quiet; the beach (ocean, not lake) is about a 15-minute walk away. The Bonaba Cafe is the best restaurant in the area.

Many excursions are on offer – though a horseriding tour (1½/three hours CFA13,000/25,000) around the lake or on the beach is highly recommended.
