Stromness Hotel

Orkney

Proudly surveying the main street and harbour of Stromness, this lofty Victorian hotel is a reminder of the way things used to be, with posh revolving door and an imposing facade. The pink-hued rooms are spacious, and have a certain charm, though a few quirks (uneven floors, old-fashioned fittings, generator noise in some rooms) let the overall package down. A refit is needed.

The claustrophobic lift means your suitcase will have to find its own way up.
