Hidden under a tangle of dense riverine trees on the shore of Lake Ihema, this refined tented camp with an intimate feel – there are only nine units, all with lake views – is a delightfully relaxing place. While it's not as ornate as some top-end camps elsewhere in East Africa, it's a steal at this price.
Sitting on the raised decks outside each tent watching the birds, crocs and hippos go about their daily lakeside lives will be a highlight of Akagera for many. It's managed by African Parks, with all profits going back into conservation projects. Solar panels provide all the power and everything is done with sustainability in mind. No wi-fi, but there's 3G.
