This monastery was built by widows of the Battle of Borodino, and there are several exhibits on the grounds related to the 1812 battle. Leo Tolstoy stayed here when he was writing about the events that transpired nearby for his novel War and Peace. Nowadays, the building where he stayed contains an exhibit dedicated to the historical and fictional characters that populate his pages.
