Wilfrido ‘Fido’ Aponte became a local legend for his sangria – a blend of Bacardí 151 and sweet tropical fruit juice. The drink garnered such a following that, according to locals, Bacardí offered a fortune for the recipe; Fido refused. His heirs still produce several varieties of the ‘wine cocktail’ and sell them out of a garage in a Mayagüez neighborhood.
Across the street from here is Fido's Sangria Garden where food can help soak up the booze. The sangria is delicious stuff, but the high sugar content ensures a memorable hangover. To find it, head northeast out of town on Hwy 106 and turn right into a residential neighborhood on Arturo Gigante. Make a left on Dulievre.
