Cantina Zé Avillez

Alfama, Castelo & Graça

While it's clear Portugal's top chef, José Avillez, is certainly not concerned about saturating the market, this stylish newcomer, the 14th in his Lisbon line-up, does come in a welcome location near Alfama, where finding an authentic meal can be a challenge. Here gorgeous classics (octopus Bacalhoeiro, grilled meagre) are sometimes inflected with beyond-the-border touches (bok choy migas, smoked paprika).

With its proximity to Sé de Lisboa, Casa dos Bicos and Alfama, it's one of the better choices when exploring this side of town.
