Tomar’s most atmospheric budget choice, this once-grand townhouse on the main pedestrian drag features large and sprucely maintained rooms with antique furniture and fixtures. Especially pleasant are the elegant breakfast room, serve-yourself bar and kindly owners. It's better value in summer than winter, when it can feel a little chilly.

Only the most intimate of travel companions or exhibitionists will be comfortable in room 101 however – it features a front-and-centre, see-through toilet and shower.
